It’s long been known that the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest overall diets.

Now, research shines new light on the ways that one of the diet’s main components — olive oil — helps boost heart health. Just Half a Tablespoon of Olive Oil a Day Can Improve Heart Health.

 

Researchers presented their findings at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions in Phoenix.

Here are some educational facts - eight different categories of olive oils and olive-pomace oils exist:

  • extra-virgin olive oil,

  • virgin olive oil,

  • virgin lampante olive oil,

  • refined olive oil,

  • olive oil composed of refined olive oil and virgin olive oils,

  • olive pomace oil,

  • crude olive-pomace oil,

  • refined olive pomace oil.

 

Not all categories can be sold to consumers; only extra-virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil, olive oil composed of refined olive oil and virgin olive oils and olive pomace oil can be purchased directly at retail level.

The European Commission has produced a factsheet with further details on the categories, characteristics and production of olive oil.
